Worried about being unable to find gainful employment after graduating due to AI soaking up all the jobs? No worries! American University is here to help you with the career opportunities AI could never replicate. Morally reprehensible career opportunities, of course, but hey, what can you do?
Buried in a widely accessible and highly publicized email, American University’s Career Center announced that students would have the enlightening opportunity to meet with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recruiters on our very own campus. The email, sent bright and early to all AU students on Oct 12th, 2026, included other humanities focused involvement opportunities such as the Non-Profits Making A Difference Fair, Teach for America pop-up table, and, of course, coffee chats with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
DHS is specifically holding coffee chats on October 22nd for bright-eyed, eager and uninhibited undergraduate students looking to invest 10 weeks of their summer into Homeland Security’s Professional Opportunities for Student Workforce to Experience Research Initiative (HS-POWER). Students accepted into the HS-POWER program would be diligently researching science and technology that would better support the mission of DHS. The listing boasts that former HS-POWER interns have been placed with agencies within DHS such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This comes weeks after ICE agents shot an unarmed man in his car with his five-year-old son present in New York City, and months after two civilians in Minneapolis, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were killed by ICE agents while protesting.
This also follows a long string of AU inviting right-wing speakers from the federal government to address the student body. The AU Administration allowed the American University College Republicans to host Paul Ingrassia, a former Trump Administration staffer who claimed to have a “Nazi streak,” on campus this past February, which was met with massive student outcry. The Washington College of Law, AU’s law school, was slated to host conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for an event this past semester, until his appearance was canceled due to student pushback. Will there be a reaction from indignant students outraged that American University is offering up its student population to an agency with so much blood on its hands? Who’s to say, really.
