PENNSYLVANIA AVE — On October 18th, thousands across the country took to the streets to protest the Trump Administration as part of the nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations.
In Washington, D.C., crowds filled Pennsylvania Avenue for hours as guest speakers including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, British-American political commentator Mehdi Hasan, and science educator Bill Nye addressed the demonstrators.
“This day is very important to show that we won’t tolerate Authoritarianism in our country,” said freshman student, Michael Williams-Owolabi.
Among those in attendance were students from American University, representing groups such as AU’s YDSA, Sunrise Movement, and Free D.C chapters.
Coco Poye, a senior at American University, described the protest as a fight for democracy.“I hate that the National Guard is in D.C. I am angry that the Rule of Law does not exist in this country anymore.”
The demonstration remained largely peaceful, with participants holding signs that read phrases such as “No Kings, No Tyrants” and “Rise up and Resist.” Plenty of inflatable creatures and costumes roamed the scene, from a giant chicken to a few Revolutionary War reenactors and an inflatable President Trump in a diaper walking around the crowd.
“Keep your head high and do whatever you can to resist. We will all get through this together,” said Charles Simon, a senior at American University.
